Cycle- Fall of the Titans

The breakdown of birth and rebirth as an endless cyle as the titans fall into the murky depths. Expressionism/Impressionism is key in this painting as I abandon bold mark making for expressive vertical strokes and hints of bold colours, to express underwater depths.

Immersion: Rise

The infinite possibilities of evolution and creativity within this realm after the death of the creators. A mix illustrative and sketch-like brush marking, I attempt to combine both elements to reach a blance of immersion within a crowded painting...

Birth-Titans

This painting was the first in my series and I wanted it to convey the raw chaos of the birth of my fantasy series. The brush marks are much bolder and has less room for expression giving it a solid freshtone to the rippling muscles... The boldness was countered with the background using expressive and simply brushmarks usually vertical strokes or large sweeps of black.

Chronicles of Darkness

In this project I focused around the concepts of religion, mythology, legends and folklore, ideally Western and Eastern aesthetics fused with symbolism. The examples of artists I studied examples being Salvador Dali, Giha Moon and Nigel Cooke. Their art revolves around conceptual fantasy in which I fused their ideas or techniques into my work, using acrylic as my primary medium. My work followed my proposed plan but also evolved as I discovered more artists. A key move was from smaller canvasses to a larger, as this allowed me to see the potential of greater expressions of mark-making and stage design.

My project came out positively, finishing with four main large canvases and two smaller side canvases. . I feel my art is swayed towards a surrealist/symbolism direction that has been mixed with Eastern aesthetics, however the narrative is developed successfully with similarities or connecting ideology or recurring characters which I hope the viewer can read, although those able to identify the symbolic or ideological imagery used, would need some awareness of the globalisation of culture and social studies. Globalisation is the process of international integration arising from the interchange of worldviews, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture. Advances in transportation and telecommunications infrastructure, including the rise of the telegraph and its posterity the Internet, are major factors in globalization, generating further interdependence of economic and cultural activities. My need to express Eastern and Western aesthetics individually and then force a hybridisation is not a unique response to culture, rather a reinterpretation of what has previously been expressed. Of course this was going on before the colonial period, but could be more adequately expressed within this period due to the booming expansion of trade. (e.g. Impressionism & Avant-garde).

In the module I also managed to distance my images from illustration through the usage of expressive mark making. Due to the nature of acrylic mediums I had to paint much more rapidly (and diluted) which helped me progress a much more rapid style of painting (as opposed to oil paints in which the manipulation of paint can cause stagnation of style). Much like story telling,
